Subway, once a giant in the fast-food world, is closing restaurants across the United States at a surprising rate. The brand, known for its made-to-order sandwiches, is now facing major challenges that have reduced its U.S. presence to its smallest size in 20 years.
How Many Subway Stores Have Closed?
A decade ago, Subway had over 27,000 locations in the U.S. But times have changed. In 2024 alone, the chain closed 631 stores, bringing its total number of U.S. locations down to 19,502. That’s the lowest number since the early 2000s.
This is the eighth year in a row that Subway has downsized its U.S. footprint. Since 2016, the company has closed around 7,600 stores nationwide, including 1,000 closures each in 2018, 2019, and 2021, according to industry data from QSR.
Will More Subway Stores Close?
While Subway hasn’t announced more closures yet, it also hasn’t ruled them out. The company told CNN that it is reviewing store locations using a “strategic, data-driven approach” to make sure each restaurant is in the best spot and run by the right franchise owner.
Should Fans Be Worried?
If you’re a Subway fan, there’s still some good news. While U.S. stores are shrinking in number, Subway is growing internationally. It now operates around 37,000 locations worldwide.
Even with fewer U.S. stores, Subway still has the largest restaurant footprint in the country—more than Starbucks (16,935) and McDonald’s (13,559).
Other Chains Also Cutting Back
Subway isn’t alone. Other big chains are also downsizing. For example, Pizza Hut closed up to 300 dine-in locations in 2020 after its biggest U.S. franchisee, NPC International, filed for bankruptcy.
