North Carolina Supreme Court Election Dispute Ends with Riggs’ Victory
In a key decision, a federal judge has ordered North Carolina’s election officials to certify the North Carolina Supreme Court election results from November. This ruling confirms Democrat Allison Riggs as the winner after months of legal challenges.
Riggs secured a narrow victory over Republican Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin by just 734 votes. However, Griffin contested the outcome in state court, claiming tens of thousands of ballots were invalid. The state Supreme Court partly agreed, questioning hundreds of votes.
Federal Court Upholds Voter Rights in NC Election Case
Following the state ruling, Riggs and her legal team moved the case to federal court, arguing that discarding votes after they were legally cast would violate constitutional due process. The case centered on protecting voter rights in close elections.
Judge Myers Rules for Certification of NC Supreme Court Race
Chief Judge Richard E. Myers II of the Eastern District of North Carolina sided with Riggs. His decision stressed that invalidating legally submitted votes was unconstitutional. The recount confirmed Riggs’ win, leading to the certification order.
Though Griffin can still appeal, the ruling stands as a win for voter rights and election integrity.
