Media mogul Barry Diller has opened up about his sexuality and decades-long relationship with fashion icon Diane von Fürstenberg in a deeply personal essay published on May 6 in New York Magazine. The excerpt is part of Diller’s upcoming memoir, Who Knew, which is set to be released on May 20.

Diller, 83, candidly reflected on his past relationships with men, stating, “While there have been a good many men in my life, there has only ever been one woman, and she didn’t come into my life until I was 33 years old.” That woman is von Fürstenberg, 78, whom he married in 2001 after a complex, decades-spanning romance.

He described their bond as one filled with “romantic love and deep respect,” noting that the pair experienced both emotional highs and personal setbacks—including separation and eventual reconciliation. Despite years of media speculation about his sexuality, Diller expressed that his relationship with von Fürstenberg defied traditional labels and expectations.

The couple first met in the mid-1970s and reconnected years later, sparking what Diller described as a “ferocious” and spontaneous romance. Though Diller had long struggled with publicly acknowledging his attraction to men, he wrote that the connection with von Fürstenberg felt natural and unforced.

I’m well aware that this part of my life has caused confusion and lots of speculation,” he wrote. “It really is the miracle of my life.”

In the memoir, Diller admitted that fear of being ostracized kept him from coming out publicly for many years. He lived in what he called a “pretend life,” suppressing his truth to avoid backlash.

Despite these internal struggles, Diller emphasized that his sexuality was never a conflict in his relationship with von Fürstenberg. The couple endured a rough patch in the 1980s when von Fürstenberg reportedly had an affair, but they later reconciled.

Diller called von Fürstenberg “the bedrock of my life” and expressed gratitude for the evolving acceptance of sexual fluidity in today’s society. Their relationship, he says, remains a powerful, enduring love that defies explanation.
