Epic Games’ efforts to bring Fortnite back to iOS have hit a major roadblock, as Apple has blocked the game’s submission to the U.S. App Store and Epic Games Store for iOS in the European Union. Despite legal victories and new regulatory frameworks, Fortnite remains unavailable on iOS platforms worldwide.
Epic publicly announced the setback, stating, “Now, sadly, Fortnite on iOS will be offline worldwide until Apple unblocks it.” The conflict stems from Apple’s refusal to act on Epic’s app submission, citing pending rulings from the Ninth Circuit Court. In response, Epic filed a motion to enforce an existing court injunction that prevents Apple from rejecting apps solely because they use external payment links.
The injunction stems from Epic’s original 2021 antitrust lawsuit, where the court ruled Apple could no longer restrict developers from directing users to alternative payment systems. Despite that, Apple has allegedly used app review technicalities to delay or reject Epic’s efforts to reinstate Fortnite on the platform. 
According to Epic, Apple’s latest requirement demanded that they submit two separate versions of Fortnite—a violation of Apple’s own guidelines. Epic argues this is a double standard not applied to other developers, and sees it as continued retaliation for challenging Apple’s dominance.
In legal filings, Epic noted it informed Apple of its intent to re-submit Fortnite using the same developer account currently distributing apps in the EU. Apple initially indicated this was acceptable but later backtracked, citing contractual disputes under the Developer Program License Agreement (DPLA).
Epic contends that Apple’s refusal directly violates the court’s injunction and undermines both the ruling and the EU Digital Markets Act. “The only explanation for Apple’s decision is retaliation,” Epic claimed, further arguing that the court’s orders prohibit Apple from rejecting apps that include lawful external purchase options.
Apple has maintained its position, stating that Epic previously breached the DPLA, giving Apple legal grounds to terminate the developer account. Apple emphasizes that its recent actions are consistent with existing legal rights and not in violation of court orders.
As both companies continue legal maneuvers, Fortnite fans await a resolution that will determine if and when the game will return to iOS platforms.
