Damson Idris Makes Met Gala Statement with F1-Inspired Tommy Hilfiger Transformation
Damson Idris turned heads at the 2025 Met Gala with one of the night’s most cinematic and memorable entrances. Dressed as his character Joshua Pearce from the upcoming Formula 1 movie F1, Idris arrived in a full APXGP racing suit, complete with a Swarovski crystal-encrusted helmet—20,000 crystals in total.
But the real surprise came when the actor dramatically tore off the racing gear on the red carpet, revealing a custom Tommy Hilfiger tuxedo underneath — perfectly aligned with the Met Gala’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
A Tribute to F1 and Fashion
Idris’ bold entrance served as both a nod to his new role and a fashion-forward moment. The F1 movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), also stars Brad Pitt and will hit theaters on June 27, 2025.
“The Met is all about making a statement,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “We wanted Damson’s entrance to blend cinematic drama with tailored elegance, and it delivered.”
The sharp Tommy tartan suit beneath the race gear was a seamless bridge between high-octane racing culture and luxury fashion, reflecting the dual worlds of Idris’ current journey.
Formula 1 Authenticity on and off the Red Carpet
Idris has spent time training with Lewis Hamilton, who is not only a producer on F1 but also served as a co-chair of the 2025 Met Gala. Idris credits Hamilton with helping the film stay true to the sport’s technical and emotional intensity.
“Lewis calls BS where it counts,” Idris shared. “He makes sure we get it right—because no one knows this world better than him.”
Hamilton also reflected on his Met Gala role:
“After I brought Black designers in 2021, Anna Wintour and I started talking about what the Met could grow into. When she asked me to co-chair this year, I was honored.”
