David Muir, the longtime anchor of ABC World News Tonight, has been a fixture in American journalism since taking over the anchor desk in 2014. With nearly 7 million viewers tuning in nightly, Muir is widely regarded as the most-watched news anchor in the U.S. Known for his composed delivery and field reporting, he’s covered major global stories, interviewed world leaders, and even met Pope Francis.
Over the years, Muir has earned multiple Emmy nominations and won the prestigious award in 2010, 2017, and 2018. While his professional accomplishments are widely celebrated, recently, Muir has become the subject of an unexpected viral trend—being called “Daddy” by fans on social media.
The nickname, popularized through TikTok videos and Twitter memes, portrays the veteran journalist in a more playful and affectionate light. In a new interview with PEOPLE, Muir opened up about the attention and how he’s taking it in stride. 
“People will forward TikTok videos, but only because they are laughing out loud at them and making fun of me and saying, ‘When did you become Daddy?’” he said with a chuckle.
Reflecting on the attention, the anchor added, “So I don’t know whether that happens when you hit 50 or what, but I’ll take it as a compliment, I think.”
Known for his reserved personality and classic style, Muir also poked fun at his discomfort in the spotlight. “Anyone who works with me knows that I am so uncomfortable even having to put on the tux. So the fact that I survive those events is still a surprise to me without looking like a total nerd.”
Still, he sees the humor in it all. “So maybe it’s lost on me, but I guess Daddy’s better than the alternative,” he mused.
