A New Chapter in Disney’s Global Expansion
Disney theme park in Abu Dhabi, Disney is bringing its magic to the Middle East for the first time. The company recently announced plans to build a Disney theme park in Abu Dhabi, joining the already vibrant entertainment landscape of Yas Island. The centerpiece? A dazzling spiraling castle that appears to be made entirely of crystal.
Yas Island: The Ultimate Entertainment Hub
Less than two decades since its inception, Yas Island has transformed into a global destination for thrill-seekers and families alike. It is already home to world-class attractions such as:
-
Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi (opened in 2018)
-
The world’s fastest roller coaster
-
The highest non-inverted loop coaster
-
A record-breaking indoor marine theme park: SeaWorld Abu Dhabi
This new Disney park will further elevate Yas Island’s reputation as one of the world’s premier entertainment destinations.
Disney Partners with UAE-Based Miral
The Walt Disney Company will collaborate with Miral, the developer behind all Yas Island theme parks, to bring this massive project to life. According to Disney, this marks its seventh global theme park resort.
“This seventh Disney theme park resort will combine Disney’s iconic stories, characters and attractions with Abu Dhabi’s vibrant culture, stunning shorelines, and breathtaking architecture,” Disney said in an official statement.
Human Rights Concerns and Global Reactions
Despite the excitement, the announcement has sparked conversation. Human Rights Watch has highlighted ongoing human rights concerns in the United Arab Emirates, including restrictions on free speech and LGBTQ+ rights.
Disney CEO Bob Iger responded to questions during an earnings call, saying,
“We did study the region very carefully, and we know we had many opportunities. Obviously, building a theme park in a location is a huge endorsement of the location.”
What It Means for Disney’s Business
Disney’s “experiences” division — which includes theme parks, cruises, and other attractions — now makes up 60% of the company’s annual profit, even in today’s uncertain economy. The Abu Dhabi project is a strategic move to strengthen this profitable sector further.
While the opening date for Disney Abu Dhabi has not yet been confirmed, anticipation is already building.
