Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement released by his office on Sunday.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was evaluated after experiencing worsening urinary symptoms. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer, with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), and the cancer has spread to his bones,” the statement read.

While this type of cancer is serious, Biden’s team noted it is hormone-sensitive, which means there are effective treatment options available. Biden, 82, and his family are currently reviewing those options with his physicians.

What the Diagnosis Means

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. According to Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a urologist with Orlando Health, “As men age, it’s common to have small amounts of cancer cells in the prostate.” However, a Gleason score of 9 signals a very aggressive form of the disease.

Dr. Benjamin Davies, a professor of urologic oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, added, “This score indicates a high-risk, fast-growing cancer, and the fact that it has spread to the bones makes it incurable, though treatments can significantly extend life.”

Treatment Options and Outlook

Even in high-risk cases, many men maintain a good quality of life. New hormonal and chemotherapy treatments have improved survival rates. Doctors caution, however, that treatment decisions must carefully consider side effects like changes in mood, memory, and overall well-being.

“It could take a few weeks to finalize his treatment plan,” said Dr. Brahmbhatt. “The right balance is key.”

Health Concerns and Biden’s Legacy

Health and age were ongoing concerns during Biden’s presidency, especially during the 2024 campaign. Despite a clean bill of health in early 2024, his performance in debates and later withdrawal from the race raised questions about his condition. However, Biden and his wife, Jill, have pushed back on claims of cognitive decline.

Appearing on ABC’s The View recently, Biden denied those claims, saying, “There is nothing to sustain that.” Jill Biden added that he worked tirelessly even during his final year in office.

Support from Across the Political Spectrum

Former President Donald Trump put politics aside to wish Biden well, posting on Truth Social: “Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Vice President Kamala Harris also expressed support, calling Biden a “fighter” and sending prayers to the Biden family.

Biden’s Ongoing Fight Against Cancer

Biden has long championed the fight against cancer, particularly after losing his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015. As vice president, he led the White House Cancer Moonshot initiative. He relaunched the program in 2022 as president, aiming to cut cancer deaths in half within 25 years.

“We’re mobilizing a national effort,” Biden said last year. “It’s not just personal—it’s about what’s possible.”

Nationwide Support and Well-Wishes

Prominent figures including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton praised Biden’s advocacy and extended their support. “Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer,” Obama said.

As Biden and his family face this challenge, they are surrounded by an outpouring of support—and the hope that the former president can once again show resilience in the face of adversity.
