The much-anticipated rematch between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia will not be happening, despite strong indications earlier this year that the bout was imminent.
Their first clash took place in April 2024 at the Barclays Center in New York. In a stunning performance, Garcia dropped Haney multiple times and won by points in what many considered an upset. However, the result was later overturned after Garcia failed a post-fight drug test. The bout was ruled a no contest, and Garcia was handed a 12-month suspension from boxing.
Garcia returned to the ring last month, facing Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in a high-profile event in Times Square, New York. The event also featured Devin Haney, who squared off against Jose Ramirez. The expectation was that if both fighters emerged victorious, a rematch could be scheduled for later in 2025.
Haney did his part, defeating Ramirez convincingly. Unfortunately for Garcia, he was dropped by Romero and lost via unanimous decision, casting doubt on the proposed rematch.
Now, Oscar De La Hoya—Garcia’s promoter—has officially ruled out the possibility. Speaking with FightHype, De La Hoya made it clear that a Haney rematch is no longer in the plans.
“No, that’s not the direction we want to go,” De La Hoya stated. “Zero interest whatsoever. I’ve already sat down with Ryan, and he’s in great spirits. We’re looking ahead and finalizing future plans.”
Instead, De La Hoya suggested that Garcia should pursue a rematch with Romero to avenge his recent loss.
“Well, as a fighter, not just a promoter, I’d say go get revenge. In boxing, you’re only as good as your last fight,” De La Hoya added.
With the Haney vs. Garcia rematch now off the table, Haney is expected to seek new challenges. One potential opponent being discussed is Teofimo Lopez, either at a catchweight or at the full 147-pound welterweight limit.
The future paths for both Garcia and Haney remain uncertain, but one thing is clear: the rematch that once seemed inevitable is no longer in the cards—at least for now.
