Pete Alonso has been one of the driving forces behind the New York Mets’ success in 2025, but on Sunday night in the Bronx, a crucial error by the star first baseman sparked a disastrous eighth inning that handed the game to the rival Yankees.
With the game tied 2–2 in the bottom of the eighth and runners on second and third, Alonso fielded a ground ball from Jordan Vivas and attempted to throw out Jasson Dominguez at home. Instead, the throw sailed high over catcher Francisco Alvarez, allowing the go-ahead run to score.
That mistake opened the floodgates.
Paul Goldschmidt followed with an RBI single to make it 4–2, and after Trent Grisham walked to load the bases, Mets reliever Genesis Cabrera managed to strike out Aaron Judge. But Cody Bellinger delivered the knockout punch, crushing a grand slam to right field and extending the Yankees’ lead to 8–2.
Although Alonso wasn’t solely to blame, his error clearly shifted the game’s momentum. He owned up to it after the game.
“I messed it up,” Alonso said. “I just made an awful throw. That whole inning, this game, it’s on me. After that throw, the momentum got out of hand and they had really good at-bats. This one’s on me.”
While Alonso has never been known for his glove, his offensive production has helped power the Mets to the top of the NL East. Coming off a “prove-it” contract after a disappointing 2024 season, Alonso’s bat has sparked early MVP chatter in 2025.
Despite the defensive lapse, Alonso remains a crucial piece of the Mets’ lineup and a big reason they’re contending this year.
The Mets will try to move past the tough loss as they head to Boston to open a series against the Red Sox on Monday night. Meanwhile, the Yankees host the Texas Rangers beginning Tuesday.
