A deadly shooting erupted at the Las Vegas Athletic Club (LVAC) on North Rainbow Boulevard on the afternoon of May 16, 2025. A gunman entered the fitness facility around 1:30 p.m., opened fire, killing one person and injuring three others before being shot and killed by responding police officers.
Gary Steward, 20, and Liam Johnson, 19, were on their way to the gym but stopped at a nearby nutrition store moments before the shooting. They said that delay may have saved their lives, as they saw bullets fly and people flee as they approached the building.
One of the victims died inside the gym, while two others were transported to University Medical Center—one in critical condition and the other with non-life-threatening injuries. Undersheriff Andrew Walsh of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police confirmed the gunman was armed and opened fire inside the facility. Officers encountered the suspect near the door; when he fled, they discharged their weapons, killing him.
Witnesses described a chaotic and traumatizing scene. One gym-goer said she attempted to help a man with a gunshot wound in the parking lot, while others heard screaming about children in the daycare. Another witness reported hearing multiple gunshots and immediately fled.
Police have not released the names of the deceased or the shooter. They also have not confirmed whether the shooter was a gym member or employee. Investigators are still working to determine a motive.
The Las Vegas Athletic Club issued a statement expressing heartbreak and confirmed the facility would remain closed temporarily. The company is offering grief counseling for employees and is cooperating with law enforcement by providing video footage.
The community was left shaken by the unexpected violence. One woman, Dawn Lewis, who frequents the gym, said she considers it a sanctuary and was stunned by the tragedy.
