The Gathering – Final Fantasy is almost here, and during a special panel at PAX East 2025, Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix showcased the first major preview of this epic crossover set. Featuring characters and themes from all 16 mainline Final Fantasy titles, the set will include over 400 main cards, four 100-card Commander decks, and a special “Through The Ages” bonus sheet.
Transformation is a key mechanic throughout the set. Cards like Garland, Knight of Cornelia, Cecil, Dark Knight, and Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER feature double-sided formats that evolve during play. Meanwhile, the Job Select mechanic allows Equipment like White Mage’s Staff and Black Mage’s Rod to create and auto-equip Hero tokens with specific class types and buffs.

Popular Final Fantasy characters such as Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Squall, Yuna, Lightning, Noctis, and Clive were showcased, each bringing mechanics tied to their in-game roles. Cloud gains bonus effects from Equipment, while Sephiroth can drain life and eventually transform into One-Winged Angel. Tifa enhances combat phases, and Aerith boosts all legendary allies when she dies.
Commander deck leaders like Terra, Y’shtola, and Rinoa showcase synergy with their respective game themes. Summons like Bahamut and Valigarmanda introduce unique battlefield-wide effects, including mass damage and graveyard manipulation.
The Through The Ages bonus sheet contains 64 reprints from Magic’s history, reskinned with Final Fantasy artwork. Cards like Firion, Zidane, and Kuja appear as both original and reprinted versions across set types.
Collectors will chase rare finds like the Gold Serialized Traveling Chocobo, with only 77 printed globally, exclusive to Collector Boosters.
Additional new mechanics include Meld, which allows Fang and Vanille to combine into the powerful Ragnarok, and Tiered Magic, where spells like Fire Magic grow stronger based on how much mana is spent to cast them.
The set launches June 13, 2025, with prerelease events starting June 6. Between the nostalgic appeal, strategic depth, and stunning artwork, this MTG x Final Fantasy set is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious Magic expansions yet.
