The Obama Foundation has responded to former President Donald Trump’s recent remarks criticizing the progress of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. During a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump described the construction effort as a “disaster,” alleging it faced delays and budget issues due to prioritizing “woke” hiring practices over qualified labor. He claimed construction had halted as a result.

In a public statement, the Obama Foundation pushed back, emphasizing the ongoing development and anticipated benefits of the center. The foundation confirmed that the 19.3-acre facility in Jackson Park is on track to open in spring 2026. Once completed, the site will include a museum, auditorium, library, gymnasium, community gardens, a playground, and a public library branch. The project is expected to attract more than 800,000 visitors annually and bring significant economic uplift to Chicago’s South Side.

The University of Chicago has projected that the center will generate substantial job opportunities and stimulate local businesses, reinforcing its role as an economic engine for the area. Despite facing legal and logistical challenges, such as community opposition to building in a public park and a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination by a subcontractor, the foundation maintains that the construction timeline remains unaffected.

The Obama Foundation reiterated its mission to create a hub for leadership development and civic engagement, reflecting the legacy of President Barack Obama. They highlighted the widespread public support and enthusiasm from visitors who have viewed the site, praising its scale and potential to inspire future generations.

While political debate continues over the center’s development, the Obama Foundation remains firm in its commitment to completing the project and delivering a lasting resource for the community and the world.
