Over 25 years after its original release, Practical Magic 2 is officially in development, with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock set to reprise their roles as the magical Owens sisters. Warner Bros. confirmed the sequel in June 2024 through a TikTok announcement, thrilling fans of the original 1998 cult classic.
The sequel will once again feature Kidman as Gillian Owens and Bullock as Sally Owens. Both stars are also set to produce the film, alongside Denise Di Novi. Akiva Goldsman, known for films like The Client, Batman Forever, and I, Robot, is attached to write the screenplay.
While full casting details haven’t been revealed, Kidman confirmed in an interview that she and Bullock are returning, teasing, “There’s a lot more to tell.” It remains unclear if original cast members like Evan Rachel Wood, Stockard Channing, Alexandra Artrip, or Aidan Quinn will return.
Practical Magic 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
Plot details are currently under wraps. When asked, Kidman playfully directed fans to “ask Sandy,” adding that the project is still in the early stages.
The original Practical Magic, based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel, followed the Owens sisters—witches grappling with a family curse that dooms the men they love. The plot thickens after Sally accidentally kills Gillian’s abusive boyfriend, forcing them to face the supernatural consequences together.
Although the original film received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, it later found success as a cult favorite. The chemistry between Kidman and Bullock, especially in memorable scenes like “midnight margaritas,” has kept the film close to fans’ hearts.
Both stars have fond memories of the first film. At the 2018 Oscars, Kidman said, “I love that movie. I showed it to my kids.” Bullock also reflected on the fun they had filming, particularly the improvisation and spontaneity behind some of its most iconic moments.
As anticipation grows, fans can expect more updates in the lead-up to the 2026 release. Whether Griffin Dunne will return as director is still unknown.
