A car drove into a crowd at a Vancouver street festival on Saturday night. Local police report that many people died, and several others sustained injuries. The incident occurred just after 8 p.m. It happened near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street in the Sunset on Fraser area. Members of the Filipino community had come together to celebrate Lapu Lapu Day.
Vancouver police confirmed that the driver is in custody. They said, “Several people have died, and many others are hurt.”
One witness told CTV News he saw a black vehicle driving erratically moments before the crash. Thousands were reportedly in the area for the festival, according to the Vancouver Sun.
“I didn’t see the driver, but I heard an engine rev loudly,” said food truck operator Yoseb Vardeh in an emotional interview. “I stepped outside, looked down the street, and saw bodies everywhere. He drove straight through the entire block, right down the middle.”
Lapu Lapu Day honors a Filipino leader from the 16th century.He opposed Spanish colonization. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim expressed his condolences. He said, “Our thoughts are with everyone affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this tough time.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney said, “I am very sad about the terrible events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver tonight.” We are all mourning with you.”
