Trump Criticizes Putin After Meeting with Zelensky at Vatican

On April 26, 2025, President Donald Trump met privately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, just before attending Pope Francis’s funeral. This marked their first face-to-face meeting since a contentious encounter in February. The 15-minute discussion was described as “very productive” by White House officials, with both leaders agreeing to continue talks.

During the meeting, Zelensky emphasized the need for a full and unconditional ceasefire and a lasting peace to prevent further conflict. He expressed hope that the meeting could lead to significant outcomes.

Following the meeting, Trump expressed skepticism about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to end the war in Ukraine. He criticized recent Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities and suggested that Putin may not be interested in peace. Trump hinted at the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia, stating, “Maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently, through ‘Banking’ or ‘Secondary Sanctions?’ Too many people are dying!!!”https://www.wafb.com

The meeting took place amid ongoing efforts to negotiate a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. While Trump has previously stated that both sides are “very close to a deal,” recent developments have cast doubt on the prospects for a swift resolution.

The Vatican has long offered to facilitate peace talks and has been a symbol of diplomacy and dialogue. The private meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the Vatican underscores the complex and high-stakes nature of international diplomacy in the context of the Ukraine conflict.https://www.wafb.com
