Rapper YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, appeared in a Broward County courtroom on Tuesday as his legal team made another attempt to secure a bond for his pre-trial release. Melly is currently awaiting a retrial for the 2018 double murder of Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams, fellow members of the YNW Collective.

The rapper has been in custody since his arrest in 2019 and is approaching nearly 2,000 days behind bars. His first trial ended in a mistrial in July 2023 after a jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. With his second trial scheduled for September 10, 2025, his defense is arguing that conditions justify a release under strict supervision.

Melly’s attorneys claim he has suffered mistreatment while in jail, including being denied access to family and legal counsel. They filed a motion for pre-trial release in March 2025, and the case reached an Arthur hearing stage this week—a special hearing for defendants charged with non-bondable offenses like capital murder.

In an effort to secure bond, Melly’s defense proposed strict conditions: 24/7 house arrest, GPS ankle monitoring, and round-the-clock private security. Lead attorney Raven Liberty assured the court that any violations would be immediately reported to the legal team, prosecutors, and the court. The defense also revealed that Melly’s record label is prepared to post bond if it is granted.

Despite these offers, prosecutors opposed the motion, citing ballistic and cellphone evidence that places Melly at the scene of the crime. Assistant State Attorney Justin Griffiths also pointed to a pending witness tampering charge and labeled Melly a continued threat to the community.

Family members of the victims, particularly Anthony Williams’ family, strongly objected to any release. Melly’s mother, Jamie Demons-King, expressed hope for a favorable ruling, noting the limited contact she’s had with her son over the past six years.

Previous bond requests have all been denied. The judge is expected to make a decision in the coming days.

If convicted in his upcoming retrial, Melly could face the death penalty.
